5 minutes with a… professional organiser

Hi Emma, thank you so much for chatting with us today. Personally I am super excited to talk to you as I love being organised but am rubbish at keeping it that way! I’m looking forward to hearing your tips.

As you know Mumma Bird Resume Services aims to empower mothers who are thinking of getting back into the work force after being on maternity leave, or maybe they are  changing careers when work and family life aren’t balancing. Part of that work life balance is about being organised so let’s begin!

Tell us a bit about yourself and your business.

I’m Erin and I run Your Organised Life. As a professional organiser it is my job to go into the homes, offices or warehouses of my clients and organise, clear and declutter for them. From pantries to play rooms, creating functionality within an office space or preparing a home for the Sale campaign I work to create systems of order and organisation that increase productivity and reduce anxiety.

What made you chose to start your business?

I was a stay at home mum and while that role was extremely rewarding I wanted more. I wanted something for me but I had to find something that worked around my families schedule. I have always thought about the functionality and layout of spaces a little differently and have always been driven by an organised routine based lifestyle. After completing pantry edits on all my friends houses I realised that I had a skill set that I could turn into my career and with the support of my friends and family Your Organised Life was born in February 2016.

How do you balance running your own business, with being a mum?

Its tough! but I run a pretty tight ship at my place, it’s the only way I can keep it all together. I write lists,  I meal plan, I have synchronised calendars with the hubby and I dedicate set hours to my business where mum is at “work”  and then set hours where I just have my mum hat on. I have a wonderful tribe of mums around me and together we “kid swap” to help each other out. There are late nights and the odd weekend where I have to work but I love it. This is my passion and working through clutter is how I tackle my own demons with anxiety. A productive day at work leaves me pumped and focused which in turn makes me a better mum, a better wife and a better friend to those around me.

As a highly unorganised Mum who dreams of being a highly organised Mum. Do you have a tip to help me get started?

Start small! The biggest mistake people make is trying to fix it all in a day! It’s just not possible.

Keep a “to do” book with you and write down everything that is rambling about in your brain. Even the boring stuff like buy mince for Tuesdays dinner!

Then when it’s all on the list figure out what you must do, what you should do and what you would like to do. Start with the must do’s then the should’s and finish if you have time with the wants.

You mentioned that you had the support of your friends and family when you decided to start your business. How important do you think this was to your success?

Their support is everything. They watch my children so I can work, the refer me to people, the encourage me to keep going when it gets tough, they offer advice on ways to improve my business and even roll up their sleeves and work with me on big jobs! Without these people in my life Your Organised Life just wouldn’t keep ticking over. It takes a village and I’m just lucky enough to have one of the best.

Finally, its 3pm on Wednesday afternoon and you’ve just realised you haven’t organised anything for dinner. What is your go to recipe for a quick and easy meal?

So this legitimately is never an issue for me. I meal plan every week, write a shopping list according to the meals planned and then shop to that list so I can safely tell you what I’m eating every night. I actually can’t handle the stress of trying to figure it out so it’s just another way I keep on top of things.

If for some reason the universe was clearly imploding and I had somehow forgot to meal plan I guess my quick go to meal would have to be fried rice! Brown rice, grated carrot, grated zucchini, frozen peas and corn, onions, garlic, bacon and an omelette all tossed together in the wok for 10 minutes with some sesame oil. Done! Kids smash it every time.

Thank you so much for your time and your wonderful words Emma. If anyone would like more information about Emma’s wonderful business Your Organised Life I have listed her details below. I’m off to sort my Tupperware draw! Wish me luck!
