I have always had a bucket list. It gets both smaller and larger every year!
Experiences are a big part of my bucket list. Everything from dinner on the Eiffel Tower to running a half marathon, swimming with sharks, buying a house….well, you get the idea.
Around the age of 24 I added one more to my bucket list.
I wanted to drink a margarita in Mexico.
On the 16th of July 2013 I got my wish. I sat in a little bar in the town of Playa del Carmen (a little holiday town on the Yucatan Peninsular of Mexico) and had my margarita. It was perfect and I loved every moment of the experience. I have posted the instagram shot below..because well..if it didn’t happen on instagram, did it really happen?
Fast forward 5 and a half years later and I am worlds away from that care free traveller with the disposable income. Right now the story finds me tucked in bed after a marathon book reading session with my 3 year old. I don’t want to hear “just one more mummy” for another 24 hours thanks. The baby is asleep in the cot and I am practising the art of silently drinking a glass of prosecco whilst googling “Minimalism” groups on FB.
So when I saw a notification that the @the_margartia_mum had started following @mummabirdresume, I actually squealed in delight! It was like a little bit of that adventurer woke back up an said “hey you..yeah you in the mum jammies…remember when you were fun?!”
Let’s start with an easy one – Tell us a bit about yourself?
My name is Rhonda and I am not your ‘stereotypical’ mixologist or bartender. I am a busy full-time working mother with 2 young daughters, a husband, and 3 step-sons. Originally hailing from Brisbane, Australia, I have since moved to Melbourne. Starting my career as a Registered Nurse, and continuing to work in the healthcare industry to this day, I never would have dreamed I’d end up pursuing my passion for Margaritas.
– How did you become the margarita mum?
I started @the_margarita_mum just over 2 years ago, quite simply because I love margaritas and wanted to share this. My personal Facebook page was overflowing with friends and family members posting Margarita recipes and memes, and I became affectionately known as ‘rhondarita’ and ‘margarhonda’.
I created The Margarita Mum Facebook and Instagram to showcase my Margarita journey. It wasn’t long before I began creating my own Margarita recipes, and eventually a wide variety of cocktails and mocktails using all sorts of spirits and aperitifs. Things have evolved quickly. The Margarita Mum Instagram account has naturally grown to 60,000 followers
– What advice do you have for mums that are trying to make their work/life/family balance work?
It is not always easy! I really do feel that I am fortunate to be running my business so that I can plan my work schedule somewhat around all the commitments. I think it is always remembering to set boundaries around designated work/family time (sometimes I need to take my own advice here.
I love that my girls see how hard I work and I hope that I am empowering them to be as driven and entrepreneurial as I am.
– What’s your favourite Margarita recipe?
You cannot beat a classic margarita made with fresh limes and premium tequila or mezcal. I like mine on the sour side so I do not include agave syrup in my ideal margarita.
– It’s 3pm on a Wednesday and you’ve just remembered you haven’t planned dinner. What’s your go-to last minute meal?
Usually something I can whip up in the Thermomix
-Rhonda, thank you so much for your time today. Personally I wanted to thank you for helping me remember that I used to love to do exciting things! This years resolutions should be some interesting ones!!
To all the Mumma Birds out there reading this article, please take the time to follow the amazing @margarita_mum and most definitely share any pics of the cocktails you make!
Happy New Year to you all xox
